    Re: OverseaTV (German TV)

Ok, my wife explained to me what a USB key is, but I don't see a USB port any where on our CMS 500 box.  So, how do we CMS 500 users update our box with this patch?

    ena,

once you are a subscriber of Shift TV you can both stream as well as download shows and convert, or do whatever you like with them. I watch them on my plasma.

    Re: OverseaTV

    Hallo Ena,

I actually watch the shows on my TV screen.  My notebook PC has an s-video port that can connect to my TV.

As a subscriber you can download a WMV.  I play the downloaded WMV file in either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player in full screen mode and it fills my TV screen.  Downloading works better than streaming, as I have found that although I do have a good and fast ISP (Cablevision Optimum Online), the streaming from a server in Germany is not flawless.

You can also take the downloaded WMV file and convert and burn it onto a DVD for use in a DVD player, although I have not tried that yet.

    Schöne Grüße

    Hallo Ena,

das kann ich mir schon vorstellen, wenn man denkt was da von Schrott auf den amerikanischen Sender für Kinder läuft.

    Re: OverseaTV (German TV)

    Cbiank,

I checked on the user guide for the CMS 500 (ironically still available on the OverseaTV support site) and it appears that the USB port for the CMS 500 is on the front left. The instructions should be the same as the Wave 300.  Good luck!!

    Re: OverseaTV (German TV)

Thanks for the tip. On the front left of my CMS 500 there is no USB port. There is an indentation where one could be installed, but no prt. How can I do the firmware update?

    Re: OverseaTV

Well, it is questionnable wether they will provide the same list of channels overseatv offered. Looks like getnextv is overly hadicapped in their offers since all the channels they offer are freely available in North America over satellite and cable. The whole idea of overseatv was to provide the channels that were not available anywhere in NOrth America neither via satellite nor via cable. Besides, looking at the set top box used by getnextv I can judge that they are stuck about 3-4 years back, since those boxes and that solution has long been forgotten. People advance yearly.

    Re: OverseaTV

All right, I actually went through all the posts and just want to clarify the picture for you all. Overseatv was doing fine until Morrey Chaplick joined them with idea of ripping a quick buck by going IPO, just the way JumpTV did. By the way, you can find many channels on jumptv.com. That's when they became
shiftv and later broadshift. Morrey Chaplick owns a scooters company right next door to shiftv at 45 Esander Drive, Unit 3, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M4G 4C5. You can pay him a personal visit and ask for your money back. So in short, they raised a few millions in investments and conditionally bought ITVN, a US operating iptv company doing very badly and standing on the verge of bancruptcy. Once they proclaimed out loud that they wish to go public with all their grey channels (they called them dark white) they immediately got sued by a few large companies. Now, you cannot go public and raise investors' money while there are active claims against you. But they already spent all the money they had initially to advertising channels, lots of staff they hired etc and eventually declared bancruptcy. Looks like ITVN will declare bancruptcy as well.

Shift was not the only company offering all those channels, if you google the web you will find other companies offering same channels. There are companies that offer Russian tv on set top boxes and computers and their service and solution is far superior to either Shift or Nextv. By the way, Nextv is operating the technologies of 3-4 years old. Their system is handicapped and does not offer any interactivity whatsoever.

Based on what I read about vutv and nextv, it looks like vutv agreed with oversea to take over their customers and declared everyone about it, however, next thing they new was a phone call or perhaps a personal meeting (since they both live and operate in Toronto) with Nextv guys who scared hell out of them that they sue them if they start offering all those grey channels. Nextv, though, offers interational versions of all channels, that's why they say they are legal, but there is no law that forbids people watching any channels they like over the internet, and that idea was successfully used by Shift. All channels offered by Nextv can be acquired over satellite, then the question is why the hell should you subscribe to IPTV with lower quality if you can get same channels over the satellite?

Now, if Nextv will start offering same channels Shift offered then they will go the same "illegal" way. From my end, I can only wish good luck to Nextv and advise all of you to google the web for alternative solution.

    Re: OverseaTV

All channels offered by Nextv can be acquired over satellite.

That`s not quite right, If you live in B.C. like myself and you like to see german TV, the only channel available is DWTVon Cable or Satellite.

Prosiebensat1.welt is only offered on Rogers cable in Ontario. So my only hope might be NexTV .

    Re: OverseaTV

tvguy is not online. Last active: 01-06-2008, 2:43 AM tvguy I just wanted to say i also was concered that Nextv is offering channels that you can get on satellite, but as i have spoken to them i found out out very soon now they will be offering 30 Russian channels and later in the year it will be increased to 40 channels  You can't get that many on satellite.

So as i understand it Overseatv just didn't have the rights to show those (Gray) channels they were just takeing those feeds

But as i also understand it Getnextv is in negotiations with many of those same channels to be legally able to show them.  So lets hope they can work things out to get those channels we want.

We can all keep writng and calling them and letting them know what channels we want.

Problem with some of the other compines i have been looking into is that there is like no info on who ownes them,, there is no tech support,,, those things worry me. For me i am gonna try getnextv, I'll see how things go,, see what there quality is like and if i don't like it i can always cancel.

    Re: OverseaTV

If they promise all those channels, that means that they are entering a gray area as well, so how different from Shift are they? There are no miracles in iptv world, just keep it in mind.

    Re: OverseaTV

    TVguy,

I can understand your sense of frustration about the loss of OverseaTV.  However, I fail to see what the purpose of writing such a negative diatribe.  You seem to mix some facts, with conjecture and personal opinion as to what happened.  For example, you single out Morrey Chaplick, whom no doubt has some culpability in the demise of OverseaTV, but you fail to mention Charles Prast.  Charles Prast replaced Morrey Chaplick as the CEO of Broadshift, Inc., while still remaining CEO of ITVN.  That is to say that Charles Prast was CEO of two companies, of which one was going to purchase the assets of the other.  This seems to be much more questionable as a business practice, yet you did not mention that.

At any rate, this is all history now and for us as consumers, pointing fingers will not bring back OverseaTV.  I think the best is to keep the discussions positive and look at what options are available or will be available.  I am of the opinion that NEXTV is making an effort.  Is it perfect?  No, but they are trying.  If you think there are better options out there, please be specific and let us know.

    Re: OverseaTV

Morey Chaplick was the brain behind the whole ordeal that brought the company down. Not to single out anyone, look at their IPO document, publicly available at sedar.com (search for broadshift), and you will see other people behind it: David Fuss, Jonathan Cohen. David Fuss is well known as one of the biggest operators of gray satellite market in Canada operating under the brand of Ariza.
NexTV might be doing any efforts, but its main strategy is mainly oriented at yelling out loud that they are legal, although no one has seen signed agreements with channels. If you are a thinking person you will start thinking how one can legally offer 30 channels over IPTV fully legally? Impossible. Hence the conclusion is that NEXTV is doing a gray market as well. Also, looking at their web site and the type of set top box they use, one can conclude that these guys have no money to hire a simple web designer as well as technical people to create a professionally looking EPG. If they don't have money for that, where is the guarantee they will stay in IPTV business? The overheads in this business are quite large. There were a few idiots at the beginning of this topic claiming that IPTV should be free, but they probably don't even realize how much money is required to run such business.
