From what point of view?

Basic components are:

Headend:

Client billing system

Middleware servers

CA/DRM server

Encoders for broadcast TV

VOD Servers for VOD

Then on the client (STB), you need the middleware display engine (usually a browser or JVM), the CA/DRM client (software smartcard equivalent) and, erm, that's it.

The 4 components of IPTV solution is below.

1.         Cisco IP/TV Content Manager: Centrally manages the Cisco IP/TV solution. The IP/TV Content Manager administers IP/TV schedule or on-demand programming of live channels, previously recorded video streams, and file transfers among IP/TV Servers.

2.         Cisco IP/TV Broadcast Server: Provides real-time encoding and delivery of live, scheduled, and on-demand video.

3.         Cisco IP/TV Archive Server: Storage server used for recording and storing of live feeds, and for Video on-demand.

4.         Cisco IP/TV Viewer: IP/TV Viewer is the client component and is available as software only. It offers high-quality reception of video streams and synchronized media, either as a standalone application or browser plug-in for Web access. The Cisco IP/TV solution supports the Apple QuickTime standalone and plug-in viewers to provide deployment flexibility in client software.

I'm starting to learn as well.  We provide professional education/training and hope to provide IPTV training soon (non-interactive as first). Trying to figure out how different component relate to each other.  Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

1. Headend is the source of the content.

2. Middleware server is what providing the program listing menu including the URLs of the content to the STBs.

3. DRM server manages the username/password and permission to access the content.  What's CA?

4. Encoders encode the MPEG1 files from my DVD recording to H.264 for streaming.  I assume I can just transcode my recording (on DVDs) to certain coding ahead of the scheduled streaming, right?

5. If we start with scheduled programs, do we need the VOD servers or something else?  Are they also called streaming servers?

Can anyone tell me the approximate cost to set up the IPTV infrastructure for Lab purpose?
